The way you describe Mrs. Hirsche in this chapter perfectly captures every admin boss I've had to deal with; the kind who say "you need to move around the room more" or "make more eye contact," even though I was writing on the white board at the time. The fact that she's "Head of Literacy" almost made me fall off my chair laughing - you nailed it.

Wow you’ve really captured the disruption of the administrator’s visit to the flow of the lesson. I like the technique of interrupting sentences describing the lesson with items from her checklist. Looking forward to the next installment!

I really enjoyed this chapter as well. Looking forward to following the story evolve. This whole going back to school thing has really inspired me. I really love how the check thing carried us through the end of the story.

The banter with Javi is great! And oh my God those - “ "high yield” teacherly strategies". Miserable. I'm in the world you're building, and I'm already feeling quite nauseous.

Nice contrasting moods captured in the chapter: the portrait of Able is really coming into focus, and the conflict with admin was well-seeded. I like the frazzled tone in the accompanying sketch, too: really gets at the emotional truth of what a Monday morning in the classroom is like.

We must protect the Javis of the world, at all costs 🫶

Hey, I dig the link between the eunuch emasculation shtick with the narrator’s father and Mrs H with her title and her emasculating clipboard in his classroom set in the context of the Javi scene as counterpoint and moral compass.

And the Hopper to get the eye in.
